Technology is an ever-growing presence in all of our lives. From the computers we use at work to the phones that connect us, it is easy to see that these devices have become engineered into our daily routines. As the market for these tools grows, so must the job markets that design, engineer, and program them.
Youth Combine, in collaboration with Gainesville Dev Academy, is hosting a summer camp that aims to provide children with the opportunity to learn skills and languages that will become vital information in the near future. Already well into their second summer, S.T.E.A.M Youth Academy is changing the face of summer camps and the kind of experiences they can provide.
S.T.E.A.M is unlike any other camp because it provides a holistic experience that teaches kids not only valuable skills like computer programming, but ties in art & design, as well fitness components to promote active lifestyles at an early age. The Academy also offers a one-of-a-kind experience by introducing kids to local startups that are unique to the downtown Gainesville area. Each week the program visits different businesses, such as Feathr, Sharp Spring, and Fracture, to name a few. These field trips allow kids to be exposed to the different jobs and careers that utilize the skills they learn throughout the camp.
The staff aim to stimulate curiosity and creativity in their projects, encouraging kids to go above and beyond the basic level in their assignments. Projects range from creating websites and mobile apps, to programming robots and video games, and each week is different. Lessons are structured so that they are accessible to all ability levels, from beginners to children with prior experience. The staff’s goal is to make this camp a fun, valuable experience that kids can use in their future endeavors.
