FITNESS PROGRAM

EDUCATION

We start every class with health and wellness education. Coaches deliver a quick lesson and then lead our athletes in a discussion about the topic. Our most common lessons are:

  • The importance of hydration, especially during physical activity.

  • Why adding muscle will add weight.

  • Different body types and body weight.

  • How flexibility and mobility can increase athletic performance and reduce likelihood of injury.

  • How to be mentally strong.

  • Setting achievable goals.

WORKOUTS

We design our workouts to provide a full body workout every day. We modify our workouts to be challenging and fun for athletes of all ages and abilities. Our workouts are organized into three fitness stations that focus on strength, agility, endurance, and speed. Athletes rotate through the stations every 8 to 12 minutes.

Our training is effective for all youth. We can challenge elite youth athletes and help kids who struggle to be physically active. We finish each class with a fun game that encourages more running once the workout is over (but don’t tell the kids that!).

Common exercise themes are:

  • All things body-weight (pull-up, push-up, sit-up, lunges, squats, etc.)

  • Lifting, throwing, slamming medicine balls.

  • Flipping tractor tires and pulling smaller tires with a belt and chain.

  • Weightlifting with light dumbbells and weighted bars.

  • Running distances of 25 – 100 meters, agility work with soccer cones.

MENTORSHIP

All of our classes are coached by University of Florida students who were high school or college student athletes. Almost all of our coaches will graduate and pursue a career in medicine, youth, or community services. Our high achieving college student volunteer coaches engage with the youth in our classes to provide one-on-one mentorship. All of our coaches are screened with national background checks, two rounds of interviews, and trained to engage in conversations about grades, behavior, attitude, hard work, and responsibility. Because our coaches are college aged, they have the unique ability to be a leader and mentor to our youth, while also being young enough to connect with the kids about current pop-culture interests like movies, music, and sports. Youth love spending time with our college student volunteer coaches.

STEAM ACADEMY

STEAM Youth Academy is a joint effort between Youth Combine and Gainesville Dev Academy. Together, we combine science, technology, engineering, art and math education with fitness programming into a single summer curriculum to enrich and enhance your child’s summer experience. We match each week’s curriculum with walking field trips and guest speakers to provide a more tangible education experience. Our curriculum is catered to each child’s age and experience, and each day is split up into classes focusing on each area of our curriculum.

“We want to build the greatest generation of youth. This requires a healthy foundation, ability to create software that will run the world, and a creative mind with the capacity for design. The world moves fast. We need to adapt and prepare our kids for a successful future.”
– Matthew Howland, Founder of Youth Combine

Older students and students with programming knowledge will participate in instructor taught programming to develop simple software. Curriculum will feature introductions on topics from video game development to robotic design.

FITNESS PROGRAMMING

Youth Combine will lead all students through fun and challenging workouts to provide the physical activity needed to keep our students stimulated and healthy throughout their time in our Academy. Fitness programming combines workouts to increase strength, coordination, and confidence with games to encourage teamwork, confidence and sportsmanship.

ART & DESIGN

Art + Design classes are taught by art professionals and are designed to increase student creativity and draw connections from the other STEM disciplines. Students will work on an art + design project throughout the week, finishing with a piece of unique art that they can take home.

LOCATION

Our Academy has exclusive access to Santa Fe College’s CIED Campus in downtown Gainesville. This year’s location is also within walking distance of the Innovation Hub, Infinity Hall and other successful Gainesville start-ups. These locations will be visited throughout the weeks to showcase the application of many of the skills that students will be learning in the academy.
